Preparing for Spring in the Garden

The sun is shining, and it is a beautiful spring day at last. Was very cold this morning but worth it to see sunshine all day long. When we get pet days like this you should use them as an opportunity to get jobs done that have been put on the long finger.

Paths, decks patios etc can all be lethal after the winter wet and so now is a good time to get cleaning. Use Armillatox or Jeyes Fluid mixed with water and apply the solution to the paths and scrub clean. If you are lucky enough to have a power hose then count your blessings because ti makes the job so much easier.

Now is also a good time to finish moving plants and shrubs in the garden. This is because they will have a chance to repair any damage caused during the move before the new growth starts.  Bare root plants should still be available in most garden centres so get them in now before they start actively growing during the spring. Plants that would be planted bare root include trees, shrubs and hedges.

Cut back any winter flowering Heathers that have finished flowering now and also make sure roses are cut back this week as it is getting late.

Now is the time to get started in the ‘grow your own’ garden as well, get the seed potatoes now before they sell out. Have them delivered to your door from gardeningonline.ie

If you want to enjoy your own potatoes later in the year get the seed potatoes now before they sell out.
