  • Hi Trish,

North facing can be difficult as I am sure you know. If you want a shrub which provides some colour at this time of the year you could try Viburnum tinus Eve Price. This can grow quite large and if you want to leave it in the container long term you would need a substantial pot. If however you just want some spring colour and are happy to change a few times a year with the seasons then I would suggest some Polyanthus or the Primula denticulata (drumstick Primula) which is one of my favourites along with maybe some Narcissus Tete a Tete (dwarf Daffodil) and maybe some Hellebores.

I hope this is of help to you let me know if you want any more info

    Regards

    Hello Peter,
Thanks for your response to my email last week …. in addition to that …….

I have a north facing front of house – would you have any recommendations for colour in containers at this time of year? I love to see growth there at all times in the year …. appreciate your assistance.

  • Hi Trish,
Rabbit resistant plants are difficult to define. By that I mean rabbits have proved to be fussy and may eat something in your garden whilst they wouldn’t eat the same plant in another garden.

However help is now at hand in the shape of a relatively new organic product called Grazers. This is a liquid that you spray on all plants after you have planted tham and it makes the plants unpalatable to the rabbits. We will have it in stock in Dunsland Garden Centre during March or if you wish you will be able to buy it online and have it delivered straight to your door through http://gardeningonline.ie

    Regards

  • Hi Olive,
The Agapanthus will most likely come back when the temperatures pick up and the new growth starts again. Don’t expect to see much before April. It is natural for them to die back completely over winter and they do indeed look a sorry state this year after the particularly cold weather we have expererienced. I can relate to what you are saying because my own Agapanthus look the same a miserable sodden mess.

  • Hi Peter, I have a plant called Agapanthus Africanus
‘big blue’ in a container,I bought it last spring & did not flower but now its a sorry sight because of the frost its leaves are like mush, please tell me it will come back to life & what should I do with it.

    Thank you,
