This is how many Escallonia plants and hedges are looking now thanks o a widespread fungal problem and then the extreme cold.

Over the last two to three years I have been dealing with more and more queries regarding Escallonia hedges not doing well. The common symptoms have been lack of overall vigour in the hedges and in particular leaf discolouration with many or all of the leaves turning yellow with black/brown spots.

The black spots on the leaves of this Escallonia are signs of a fungal infection, the brown on the edge of the leaves is frost damage.

This problem is being caused by a fungal infection and I recommend a three pronged approach to cure the problem:

Cut it back by about 30 % to promote strong new growth – but wait til the temperatures stay above 0 degrees

Remove all debris from around the base of the plants – dead leaves twigs etc as these will contain fungal spores which will only get into the soil and make the problem worse. Treat the plants with Liquid Copper Fungicide. I have found this works well at controlling the fungal infection that is damaging the plants.

Lastly give it a good feed with Seamungus – this is an Irish made product – not yet certified organic in Ireland but yes in other countries. It is  a mixture of Seaweed and Chicken Manure pellets and I have found it very successful in terms of a general fertilizer for both ornamental shrubs and fruit and vegetables.

After the big freeze that we have experienced this winter Escallonia plants are looking even more shook and only time will tell if they will all recover as we are not used to such cold and prolonged cold conditions but I still recommend carrying out the steps outlined above.

The brown discolouration on this Escallonia has been caused by the extreme cold.
